Up In Years is a campaign to help prevent STDs among seniors. As the Baby Boomer population ages, it has begun to adopt a “you only live once” attitude about sex. That’s great actually, except as inhibitions are lowered, and women no longer need contraception, the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases among seniors is rising — at an alarming rate, actually. The message we want to send is simple: “Use a condom.” Sure the tone is a little cheeky. For this audience, there’s no need to be a buzz kill. But they could use a dose of reality. Before they need a dose of something else.

“矫健活动”是一个旨在防止老年人传染性传播疾病的活动。随着婴儿潮一代逐渐步入老龄化，不少人对于性生活抱有“人生只有一次”的想法。这种想法是不错的，只是随着克制力下降，且妇女不再需要避孕，性传播疾病在老年人群中的感染率不断上升——且速度惊人。我们想传达的信息很简单：“请用避孕套。”当然语气有点儿顽皮。对于这一群体没必要泼冷水。只是在其他方面稍微放松一下之前，考虑一下现实情况总不会错。

It is difficult to convince young people to take actions now that will benefit them in the future — even when they understand the benefit at an intellectual level. This gap between belief and action is a risk to their financial well-being and health in later years. Research has shown that, when confronted with artificially aged photographs of themselves, young people are more willing to save for retirement or adopt healthier behaviors.

The Gray Mirror is a tool that can be used to encourage young people to empathize with their future selves and to perceive elders in a different light. The screen shows positive messages associated with aging and can be customized for the service being offered.

要想说服现在的年轻人现在就行动起来，却要等到未来才能让他们获益，恐怕不是一件容易的事情——虽然他们心中明白这个道理。想法和行动之间，不知不觉就萌发了未来财富和健康风险。研究显示，在给年轻人展示了自己老年时的合成图像之后，他们更愿意为退休进行储蓄或更健康地生活。

Grand Slam takes the ol’ tennis-balls-on-the-walker workaround and designs it intentionally. The wooden frame nods to both the warmth and craftsmanship of a vintage wooden racquet, as well as a fashionable walking stick. The legs end with a hint of the tennis ball form to reduce friction, dampen noise, and prevent scratch marks on the floor. In addition, a wireless geo-location module tracks steps and calls for help in case of emergency.

Sprouts is a simple program that turns the untended gardens of the elderly into a learning opportunity for school children. As with the Girl and Boy Scouts, young Sprouts develop skills and earn badges that help cultivate a new appreciation of nature, particularly for urban children. In turn, the elderly benefit by having their gardens maintained. The seniors determine the level of engagement they would like to have — be it sharing their passion for plants with the kids or merely enjoying the sounds of their happy chatter through an open window.

Pit Stop Posts is a line of street furniture designed to help seniors and those who are slower in pace find a place to rest in busy urban areas. Resting posts that appear as walking sticks allow seniors a moment’s pause or a place to hang shopping bags while they stand at traffic lights and navigate public transportation systems.

Pill Necklace

The Pill Necklace ensures that the daily medication regime is always with you and easily accessible. A simple divider separates the pills into morning, lunch, dinner, and night. Wearing the pills around the neck keeps family and friends in the loop, allowing them to remind their loved one, if necessary. The increased visibility also heightens the awareness amongst the general public and keeps the issue top of mind, which is the main objective of the Pill Necklace.

The Storybox

By the year 2050, about a third of China’s population will be over the age of 60. That’s an estimated 487,000,000 people. Or put another way, 29,220,000,000 years of collective wisdom and experience. The current generation of 60 year olds has experienced vast changes in China, from the birth of modern China to the Cultural Revolution to acceleration and emergence as a world power. Nowhere else in the world has seen this much change, this fast, at this scale. What kinds of stories and memories live in those years that we could learn from? How much of that experience has already been forgotten?

The Storybox bridges the gap between physical personal objects from the past and virtual memories for the future. A wooden box contains a curated set of small tokens of your life that can be passed on to family members. Inside, a small digital touchscreen provides a way for family members to scan, share and view photos or films from your life. Record your thoughts, stories and conversations straight into the box. An accompanying digital portal lets family members see and experience the uploaded items from anywhere. The Storybox captures a snapshot of China’s history that could otherwise go undocumented and gives families a way to share and celebrate their elders.

OWL (On the Wisdom of Life) is an elegant thought time capsule flanked with 80 glass tubes representing the years of your life. Each year, you are asked to write a reflection on the past year and a hope for the coming year to be placed it in one of the vessels. Tubes that live above the wooden piece represent the wisdom you’ve accumulated, with varying heights symbolizing the ups and downs of the year. The tubes below represent the potential for years ahead.

Quietly perched in the living room as decor, the OWL extends to all generations and can help families share each other’s histories visually on the wall.

Live Forever

In 1951, a woman from rural Maryland named Henrietta Lacks checked into a hospital at Johns Hopkins with symptoms diagnosed as cervical cancer. Doctors attempted to treat her, and without her consent took tissue samples of her tumor. The cancer cells taken from Henrietta possessed an unusual property. They could grow and divide —live— outside her body indefinitely. Henrietta died in 1951, but her cells, now named HeLa, lived on. In 1954 they were used by Jonas Salk to develop the first polio vaccine, and have been used since in research on cancer, AIDS, and many other diseases.

Live Forever is a way for scientists to immortalize tissue samples on demand. We imagine a space that explicitly acknowledges the complex relationship between the sanctity of a loved one and scientific contribution embodied in these immortal cell-lines. In a visiting room adjacent to the lab’s clean room, a custom 3D printed vessel holds a loved one’s genomic and cellular traces. In addition, relatives can control research permissions, while scientists can share their learnings from the cells via recorded oral stories and digital posts.
